- The CIS Navigator is NOT FREE. Once you find that you are using it
- regularly, you must pay for it. The price of the program is $40.00.
-
- In return, you will receive a disk containing a version of the CIS
- Navigator that doesn't display this message when it starts, a
- printed User Guide, and a way to download updated versions
- from CompuServe. Alternately, you can send $35.00 to receive
- the User Guide without the disk, and a way to modify your copy
- so it doesn't display this message when it starts. See the end of
- the help text for more information about this software.
-
- Please scroll to see information about using the CIS Navigator.

-
- Brief Overview:
-
- The CIS Navigator is used to communicate with the CompuServe
- Information Service (CIS) only. It does not work with other
- services or bulletin board systems.
-
- First double-click the COMPUSERVE SESSION PARAMETERS selection
- and enter the information needed to connect with CompuServe.
- A Hayes-compatible modem is required unless using Manual Dial.
-
- Next, double-click other selections to find lower-level lists
- leading to forums and other services of CompuServe.
-
- Double-click on a forum of interest and specify what you want
- to do in that forum. Select as many forums as you wish.
-
- Double-click on the EasyPlex selection in the Communication
- submenu and specify how you want your electronic mail handled.
-
- Use the Save command to write all the specifications to a session
- file.
-
- Use the Preview command to check or modify your specifications
- and set the order in which the various locations will be visited.
-
- If this is the first time you are using the Navigator, make sure that
- "Initialize CompuServe" is checked in the Settings menu.
-
- Use the Run command to cause the Navigator to dial CompuServe,
- execute all your specifications, save the log in your session file,
- and hang up as quickly as possible.
-
- Use the Review command to read the information in the session
- log, create replies to messages, and examine summary lists,
- specify which messages to see in detail, and which files to
- download during the next session.
-
- Use the Run command again to send your replies, download files,
- and get more messages to examine.

-
- The File Menu
-

-
- Session Menu
-
- This menu contains the main commands for the Navigator.
- ______________________________________________________
-
- Preview…
-
- Displays a preview describing what the session file will do when
- it is run. On the left side is a text description of the actions to
- be taken. On the right side is a list of the locations in CompuServe
- which will be visited. By clicking on a location and using the Up
- and Down buttons, you can modify the order in which the locations
- will be visited. By double-clicking on a location, you can modify
- the specifications describing what to do in that location. When
- finished, click the Done button.
- ______________________________________________________
-
- Run…
-
- This will dial CompuServe and execute the session. Unless the
- "Append Session Logs" menu item is checked, the previous session
- log will be overwritten. While in progress you generally just watch
- as things scroll by. If necessary you may click the Pause button to
- stop temporarily. You may type at the keyboard as a computer
- terminal. The ‚åò key is used to type control characters.
- Click Continue to have the Navigator proceed, then press Return
- so CompuServe will issue a prompt the Navigator can recognize.
- Normally if the Navigator gets stuck it will time out and hang up,
- but you may Click the Hang Up button in an emergency. Sometimes
- several clicks are needed. When downloading, click the Skip DL
- button if you decide to cancel it. The Navigator will move on to
- the next task. Sometimes more than one click is needed, or the
- Return key must be pressed to completely recover from such
- a cancellation.
-
- When the session is over you may click the Review button to
- examine the log, or the Done button to return to editing session
- specifications.
- ______________________________________________________
-
- Run at Time…
-
- Displays a clock on which you can set the time the session is to
- be run. The Navigator will wait until that time before it starts
- running.
- ______________________________________________________
-
- Review…
-
- Allows you to examine the log of the most recently run session.
- Click Prior and Next buttons to scan the log by message or location.
- Click Reply to edit a reply to a displayed message.
- Click Create to edit a new message to be left in this location.
- Click Archive to append the current message to the archive file.
- Click the location icon to modify the specifications for this location.
-
- When a message summary is displayed, click on a line then click
- the Get It button to specify a thread which should be read in full
- during the next session.
-
- When a data library summary is being displayed, click on a file
- then click the Get It button to specify that the file should be
- downloaded during the next session.
- ______________________________________________________
-
- The Settings Menu
-
- These commands adjust settings which are global in nature and
- are saved in the Navigator itself, rather than in a session file.
- ______________________________________________________
-
- Set Archive…
-
- Here you can adjust the name and type of text file which is
- used when you click the Archive button during the Review
- command.
- ______________________________________________________
-
- Set Download…
-
- This specifies where to place files which are downloaded to your
- disk, and what data transfer protocol to use.
- ______________________________________________________
-
- Append Session Logs
-
- Normally this item is not checked, which means that only the most
- recent session log is held in the session file. If checked, each
- session log is appended to the previous one. This can cause the
- creation of very large session files. This setting is saved within
- the Navigator and is permanent until changed.
- ______________________________________________________
-
- Initialize CompuServe
-
- This item is normally unchecked, except for the first time you use
- the Navigator. When checked, it will cause the Navigator to
- execute extra commands when it enters CompuServe. These
- commands will set your options within CompuServe to be
- compatible with the Navigator. After executing the session, it
- will turn off the checkmark automatically so that the initialization
- is not performed in subsequent sessions.
- ______________________________________________________
-
- The Arrange Menu
-
- The commands in this menu are not used very often. They are
- required in the case where CompuServe itself adds or deletes
- services. The commands let you change the database of locations
- and menus which the Navigator knows about (the "nodes" which
- are shown in the list windows). They are dangerous if used
- incorrectly. Use these commands on a COPY of the Navigator!
- ______________________________________________________
-
- Add Child…
-
- After creating a menu node with Add Sibling, select it and use this
- command to add the first subnode under it.
- ______________________________________________________
-
- Add Sibling…
-
- Select a node, then use this command to add a new node which
- will be placed immediately below it. This would be used to add
- a new forum to the Navigator's database.
- ______________________________________________________
-
- Modify…
-
- Select a node, then use this command to modify it. The name and
- comment can be anything you want. The GO code is the quick
- reference word that takes you to the forum. Click on the icon
- which describes the node type.
- ______________________________________________________
-
- Delete
-
- Click on a node and use this command to delete it.
- ______________________________________________________
-
- Move Down…
-
- Click on a node and use this command to move it downward in
- the list. With this command you can reorder the items in the
- list.
- ______________________________________________________
-
- Section Names…
-
- Click on a forum node and use this command to specify the names
- of the sections in the forum. This information is saved in the
- Navigator and used when creating forum messages.
- ______________________________________________________
-
- Library Names…
-
- Click on a forum node and use this command to specify the names
- of its data libraries.
- ______________________________________________________
-
- Session File
-
- A session file holds a set of session specifications and the session
- log. If opened from the Finder, it will start the Navigator and
- the Run command will automatically be executed. If you hold the
- Option key down while you open the file, the Navigator will start
- but the session will not automatically be run. If the Print
- command is given from the Finder, the session preview will be
- printed. You may open the session file from any editor in order
- to examine the session log directly. Start the editor first, then
- use the Open command and the session log file should be listed.
- ______________________________________________________
-
- Cancelling and Forgetting
-
- Several dialogs have "Forget" buttons as well as the normal
- "OK" and "Cancel" buttons. For example double-clicking on a
- Forum selection will open the forum specification dialog, which
- has these three buttons. Clicking OK means to save the
- specifications as they are in the dialog. Clicking Cancel means to
- revert the specifications back to the way they were before you
- opened the dialog. Clicking Forget means to erase the entire
- specification from the session, i.e. don't even enter the forum.
-
- While editing a previously created message or reply, Cancel
- means to revert back to the way the message was before you
- started editing. Forget means to completely erase the message,
- i.e. don't send it at all.

- About This Software:
-
- When you pay $40.00, you will receive a disk with the latest
- version of the Navigator, and a laser-printed copy of the CIS
- Navigator User Guide. The copy of the Navigator which you will
- receive on the disk will not bother you by displaying a
- shareware message when it starts, as the ones that are
- distributed freely do.
-
- Since you may have already downloaded the Navigator from
- CompuServe, or purchased it from a user group, you probably
- have spent money to obtain the Navigator. Therefore you may
- alternately send $35.00 to receive the printed User Guide without
- the disk. In this case I will personally send you a CompuServe
- EasyPlex electronic mail message congratulating you for buying
- the Navigator. Use your copy of the Navigator to read that
- message and your copy of the Navigator will magically become
- registered so it won't bother you with the shareware message!
-
- The latest version of the Navigator will always be available on
- CompuServe. Updates are free (for the price of downloading).
- If you use your registered version of the Navigator to download
- the updated version, it will magically become registered as well!
- This means that your downloaded updates won't bother you with
- the shareware message.
-
- The CIS Navigator is a low-cost shareware product to be used
